The Death Drive
This project was inspired by the book
Capitalism and the death drive. In Byung-chu Han's Capitalism and the death
drive, the logic of accumulation of capital, as opposed to the former violent
economy of killing heads to accumulate power against death and avoiding loss,
is articulated as embedded in the desire and desire to produce and consume.
Death here is not merely a proxy for biological mortality, but a gradual loss
of self and identity over the course of a lifetime. Capitalism constantly
reinforces the urge to survive, pitting and isolating life and death, with
people rejecting death through sadism and killing, and enjoying narcissism as
their power increases.
